The township of Taupo is situated at the north eastern end of New Zealand's largest lake in the heart of
the North Island's Volcanic Plateau. It is an ideal base not only for boating and fishing, but also for
visiting tourist attractions, most of which are within 1-2 hours' drive away. Just north of Taupo are the
beautiful Huka Falls and the Aratiatia Rapids and State Highway 1/5, the Craters of the Moon thermal area.

In addition and only 30 to 40 minutes' drive north of Taupo are three further thermal parks, each offering something different: Orakei Korako (just up the road from Minarapa), Waiotapu and the Waimangu Valley Park which leads down to Lake Rotomahana.

To the South lies Tongariro National Park, a World Heritage Park, containing the three volcanic peaks of Ngauruhoe, Ruapehu and Tongariro which provide a wide range of walking trails and tracks for summer visitors and two ski areas for winter sports enthusiasts. Just south of Taupo township is the turn-off for the Napier-Taupo Highway and a few kilometres along the road are the De Bretts Thermal Pools where you have a choice of public and private pools in which to soak.
