In addition and only 30 to 40 minutes' drive north of Taupo are three further thermal parks, each offering something different: Orakei Korako (just up the road from Minarapa), Waiotapu and the Waimangu Valley Park which leads down to Lake Rotomahana. To the South lies Tongariro National Park, a World Heritage Park, containing the three volcanic peaks of Ngauruhoe, Ruapehu and Tongariro which provide a wide range of walking trails and tracks for summer visitors and two ski areas for winter sports enthusiasts. Just south of Taupo township is the turn-off for the Napier-Taupo Highway and a few kilometres along the road are the De Bretts Thermal Pools where you have a choice of public and private pools in which to soak. |
